Saint-Emilion is a commune located in Gironde department, Aquitaine-Limousin-Poitou-Charentes, south-western France. Saint-Emilion has a total area of 27 km2 (10.43 ml2) and a population of 1,930 (2012 estimate).
The history of Saint-Emilion goes back to prehistoric times. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, featuring splendid Romanesque churches and ruins that stretch all along the steep and narrow streets.
The Romans planted vineyards in the site that was to become Saint-Emilion as early as the 2nd century. During the 4th century, Ausonius (a Latin poet) lauded the fruit of bountiful vine. The town was named after a travelling confessor, the monk Emilion, who in the 8th century settled in hermitage carved into the rock. He was followed by the monks and started up commercial wine production in the region.
Saint-Emilion is situated 35 km (22 miles) northeast of Bordeaux, between Castillon-la-Bataille and Libourne. Saint-Emilion is among the principal red wine areas of Bordeaux together with Graves, Pomerol and Medoc. The region is smaller than Medoc and adjoins Pomerol. In Pomerol and other appellations situated on the right bank of Gironde, the primary grape varieties are Cabernet Franc and Merlot, with relatively small amounts Cabernet Sauvignon also used by some chateaux.
The wines of Saint-Emilion were not included in 1855 Bordeaux classification. The initial formal classification in Saint-Emilion was made in 1955 and is regularly revised, unlike the 1855 classification.
