- Saint-Jean-de-Luz bay is located to the east of Bay of Biscay. It's the only sheltered bay between Spain and Arcachon. Due to its strong sea walls which protect the town from the savagery of the Atlantic, it has become favorite for bathers across Basque Coast. Despite the fact that the seaside resort is relatively recent, the port is several centuries old. The most prominent point in port's history is the marriage of Louis XIV and Spanish princess Maria Teresa in 1660.
- Saint-Jean-de-Luz is now a famous resort, popular for its sandy bay, architecture, quality of light and cuisine. The town is situated south of Biarritz, on the right bank of Nivelle (Urdazuri) river, opposite to Ciboure. The port is on the estuary, before the river joins ocean. The summit of Larrun, about 8 km (5 miles) south-east of the town, can be reached by Petit train de la Rhune, starting from Col de Saint-Ignace, 10.5 km (6.5 miles) east of the town on D4 road to Sare.
- Currently, St-Jean-de-Luz depends on tourism with high quality hotels, safe clean beaches, swimming pools, thalassotherapie spa, casino, golf courses and conference centre. The town benefits from tourism, with many travelers attracted by its pedestrian area full of shops which are open all year round.
- Many sporting and cultural events are held throughout the year in Saint-Jean-de-Luz. There are internships and concerts of classical music organized by Académie Ravel, usually in an auditorium of the same name, Basque Pelota championships, film festival specially dedicated to young filmmakers and surfing film festival.
