Saint-Malo is a picturesque walled port city in Brittany, northwestern France located on the English Channel. Saint-Malo is a sub-prefecture of Ille-et-Vilaine. In 2012 the population of Saint-Malo totalled 44,620 people on an area of 36.58 km2 (14.12 ml2). The population increases to up to 200,000 during the summer tourist season. With Saint-Malo suburbs included, the inhabitants are approximately 153,000.
Traditionally with independent streak, the city of Saint-Malo was once notorious for the "cité corsaire" (privateering). Today it is a major tourist destination, with plenty of ancient, attractive buildings.
The city of Saint-Malo features a terminal for ferry services operated by Brittany Ferries with daily departures to Portsmouth. On most days it also services Weymouth and Poole in England through the Channel Islands by Condor Ferries. Saint-Malo has its Gare de Saint-Malo, a railway station, offering direct TGV service to Paris, Rennes and a few regional destinations. There is also bus service provided by Keolis. The city of Saint-Malo is served by Dinard-Pleurtuit-Saint-Malo Airport situated 5 km (3 miles) to the south.
