Sale is a town situated in Yenangyaung Township, Magway District, Magway Region, Burma (Myanmar). Sale lies by the eastern banks of Ayeyarwady (Irrawaddy) River, and its nearest city is Chauk, located about 21 km (13 miles) away.
Sale developed as a satellite of Bagan during the 12th and 13th centuries. Today, the town is still an important religious center. It houses Bagan-era monuments as well as fifty active Buddhist monasteries. Sale is a major center for lacquerware manufacturing. It is also known as the birthplace of one of the most celebrated writers in Myanmar, U Ponnya.
