Sao Tome Island is the bigger of two major isles comprising the country of Sao Tome and Principe, located in the Gulf of Guinea, off mainland Africa's western coast (Gabon). The country's other big island is Principe, located approx 140 km (87 ml) to the northeast.
- The island has a total area of 854 km2 (330 ml2), length of 48 km (30 ml), width of 32 km (20 ml), highest elevation point (Pico de Sao Tome) 2024 m (6640 ft) and population around 157,000, which over 96% of the country's entire population. The nation's the capital city is also named Sao Tome, and is located on the isle's northeastern coast. The nearest mainland Africa's port is Gabon's Port Gentil, at approx 240 km (150 ml) to the east.
- The isle's higher slopes are forested and included in the Obo National Park area. The country's economy is largely based on agriculture (cocoa, coffee, copra, palm products) and commercial fishing. Large reserves of oil were discovered in the Atlantic Ocean between Sao Tome and Nigeria.
- Sao Tome Island's fauna is represented by around 100 bird species, of which 21 are endemic.
