Sevastopol is Crimea's largest city and a major Russian Black Sea port and naval base. Previously part of Ukraine, since 2014 Sevastopol is part of the Russian Federation (Republic of Crimea). The Port (locode UASVP) features a natural deepwater harbor. The city's population is around 420,000, mostly concentrated near the bay and its surrounding areas. Since March 2014, Sevastopol is ranked federal city (one of all 3) in the Russian Federation - together with Moscow (capital) and St Petersburg. The other major Russian Crimea ports are Yalta, Feodosia, Kerch, Yevpatoria.

During USSR times (Soviet Union, 1922-1991) the port was closed for local residents and tourists. Sevastopol is the homeport for Russia's Black Sea fleet (operating in Black Sea, Azov Sea and the Mediterranean Sea), which is why it has significant military importance. The city's mild winters and moderate summers made it a popular Russian seaside resort vacation and travel destination.

Sevastopol's main industries and major employers include plastic manufacturing (Stroitel), Aircraft Plant, shipyards (SMZ, Balaklava Bay), ship repairs (Persej SMZ, floating docks), oil and gas (Chernomorneftegaz), AO FNGUP Granit, electronic manufacturing plans, SevPZ (Economic Industrial Zone), mining (coal, iron, titanium, aluminum), metallurgy, chemical plants, agriculture (wheat, wines, fruits, tobacco), fishing, farming.

The seaport handles passenger ships (local and cruise), cargo ships and commercial fishing boats. Its infrastructure is fully integrated with the naval base and the city. Sevastopol Shipyard has 3 main facilities - all serving Russian Naval vessels and submarines. Sevastopol International Airport is also used as a military aerodrome.
