St Simons Island (Georgia) is a CDP (census-designated place) located on St Simons Island, Glynn County (Georgia, US). The island and the community are interchangeable, known just as "St. Simons Island", locally as "The Island". St Simons is part of Brunswick, Georgia Metropolitan Statistical Area. The CDP has a population of 12,740 inhabitants (2010 census). St Simons Island has a total area of 45.8 km2 (17.7 ml2).
Situated on the southeast coast of Georgia coast, midway between Jacksonville and Savannah, St Simons Island is both a residential community and a seaside resort. It is the largest of the renowned Golden Isles of Georgia (along with Jekyll Island, Sea Island, and privately owned Little St Simons Island). Tourists are drawn to St Simons Island for its warm climate, beautiful beaches, various outdoor activities, historical sites, restaurants, shops, and natural environment.
In addition to the base of permanent residents, St Simons Island enjoys an influx of both part-time residents and visitors throughout the year. 2010 Census notes that 27% of total housing units were for “seasonal, recreational, or occasional use”. The majority of residential and commercial development is found on the southern half of the isle. Most of the northern half remains woodland or marsh. In the northeast a large tract of land was converted to nature preserve, Cannon’s Point Preserve, with historical ruins, undisturbed maritime forest and trails. The tract is open to the public on specified hours and days.
Originally inhabited by Creek Nation's tribes, the area of South Georgia including St Simons Island was contested by the English, French and Spaniards. After securing Georgia colony, the land was cultivated by the English for cotton and rice plantations worked by African slaves, who created unique Gullah culture which survives to this day.
The main mode of travel to St Simons Island is by automobile via F.J.Torras Causeway. General aviation on the island is served by Malcolm McKinnon Airport.
