Stromboli Island (Strongule) is located in Tyrrhenian Sea (Central Mediterranean), off Sicily's northern coast. The island has population around 500.

Stromboli is one of the seven Aeolian Islands, together with Lipari, Vulcano, Salina, Filicudi, Alicudi and Panarea.

Stromboli has one of Italy's (and mainland Europe's) 3 active volcanoes - the other 2 being Mt Etna (Sicily) and Mt Vesuvius (near Naples).

Stromboli volcano has erupted many times. It is constantly active featuring minor eruptions visible from many points on Stromboli and from the surrounding sea, which gave rise to the nickname "Lighthouse of the Mediterranean". On April 13, 2009, was the volcano's most recent major eruption.

Stromboli Island is 926 m (3038 ft) above sea level, and over 2700 m (8858 ft) above sea bed. There are 3 active craters at the peak. Sciara del Fuoco is a big horseshoe-shaped depression generated during the last 13,000 years by collapses on the cone's northwestern side.

The island's two main villages (San Vincenzo and San Bartolo) are in the northeast, while the smaller Ginostra village is in the southwest. During the early 1900s the island had a few thousand inhabitants, but after numerous emigrations, by mid-1950s the population numbered just a few hundred.
