Tan Chau is a town situated in An Giang Province, Mekong Delta region, Vietnam. In 2003 the district had a population of 159,720. Tan Chau district covers an area of 159 km2 (61 ml2). In 2009 it was upgraded to town and has a population of around 184000.
Tan Chau was formed in 1757. Tan Chau District was the biggest province of Chau Doc, but divided by the 1929 separation of Hong Ngu District, and in 1968 split up from part of the district of Tan Phu. Today Tan Chau district is part of An Giang Province.
Tan Chau is famous for Tan Chau silk and the famous product lanh My A, in which black is dyed by Diospyros mollis's fruit. Cruisers usually have the chance to visit to a silk-weaving factory, where traditional (though mechanically driven) looms move forth and back with rapid precision. The massive warehouse housing the machines buzzes with motion and sound.
A visit to a factory that makes rattan mats and baskets is like stepping back in time to industrial revolution. Machines that are entirely made of steel and moving parts produce a cacophony of sounds. The temperature inside reaches a dozen degrees from the sweltering heat outside. There are no automation or computers here and nearly everything is either done or controlled by hand.
The best part of a Tan Chau trip is enjoying a traditional xe-loi (rickshaw) ride through the town.
