Toamasina (aka Tamatave) is Madagascar's main seaport and the capital city of the Atsinanana region. It is located in the Indian Ocean, on the Madagascar Island's east coast. Tamatave is at some 215 km (134 ml) northeast of Antananarivo (aka Tana) - the country's capital and largest city (with population over 1,5 million).
- The city of Toamasina has a population of around 275,000 and is served by the Toamasina Airport.
- Tamatave is famous with the coral reef forming a spacious harbour that can be entered by two openings.
- The city features wide avenues (beautifully lined with palm trees), numerous hotels, restaurants, beautiful beaches. However, sharks and sea pollution often prevent watersports and swimming.
- Bazary Be is a street market with local merchants selling exotic spices and hand-made merchandise (including souvenirs).
