Tournus is a commune located in the Saone-et-Loire department in the Bourgogne region, eastern France. It lies on the right bank of Saone, 20 kilometers northeast of Macon on the Paris-Lyon railway. Tournus' total area is 25 km2 (10 ml2). In 2006 its population was 6250 inhabitants.
The church of Saint Philibert (built in early 11th century in the Burgundian Romanesque style), once belonged to the Benedictine abbey of Tournus, that was suppressed in 1785. The facade lacks one of the pair of flanking towers that were originally designed for it. Roofed with barrel vaulting, the nave is supported on high cylindrical columns. Both the 11th century crypt and the choir feature an ambulatory and side chapels. A statue of Jean-Baptiste Greuze, who was born in the town in 1725, stands in the Place de l'Hôtel de Ville.
Tournus is a tourist area of great importance, with one 4-star hotel (Greuze) and one 3-star hotel (Rempart). In 2013, 4 restaurants had a Michelin star: Greuze, Aux Terasses, Meulien and Quartier Gourmand. There are fine vineyards in the surrounding area and the town and its port feature significant commerce in wine and stone from neighboring quarries. Chairmaking is a major industry. To the north and south-west, there are several industrial areas. At Groupe SEB factory, Tournus manufactures a considerable quantity of domestic white goods, and cookware at Tefal factory. Every Saturday morning, there is a market in the town.
