Vilshofen an der Donau is a Danube River cruise port. The town has a population of around 16,000 and is located at the entrance to Lower Bavarian-Upper Austrian Danube gorge from the west, at the point where the threee rivers Pfudrach, Vils and Wolfach flow into the Danube. Wedged in tightly at water's edge, the old part of the city with its closely-built houses stands out on pointed piece of headland between Danube and Vils, giving the impression of a floating island.
The twin towers of Bendictine abbey Schweiklberg reign over Vilshofen. Sights of interest include church of Maria Hilf; Africa museum in Schweiklberg abbey; central building in the form of a Greek cross; church of St. Barbara (1483) with its superb Modler altar, lookout tower - town's landmark, built by the Swiss builder Bartolomä Viscardi; Benedictine abbey Schweiklberg with abbey shop; Hausbach circular church - oldest building (1060); town's gallery in the lookout tower; Danube promenade with landing stage for cruisers.
