Vukovar is a city located in eastern Croatia. It features the biggest river port in Croatia, situated at the confluence of Vuka River and Danube. Vukovar is also the seat of Vukovar-Syrmia County. In the 2011 census the city's registered population was 26,470 with a total of 27,680 in the municipality.
Vukovar is the biggest Croatian town and port on Danube river. Its economy is based on farming, livestock breeding, viticulture, food-processing industry, footwear industry, textiles, trade and tourism. Among a number of interesting buildings, severely damaged during the recent war, the most attractive are Eltz Manor of Eltz noble family from 18th century, Baroque buildings in the city centre, the Franciscan monastery with parish church of Sts. Philip and James, the birth house of Nobel prize winner Lavoslav Ruzicka, the water tower, the palace of Syrmia County, the Orthodox church of Saint Nicholas. Since 1998 and the peaceful reintegration under Croatian control, plenty of the buildings have been rebuilt.
