Wat Hanchey dates back from 8th century. It is about 20 km up the Mekong from the provincial town Kompong Cham. Wat Hanchey was an important religious center during pre-Angkor Chenla Empire period. It was also a major centre of worship during Chenla period. Many religious monuments remain spread out over the hilltop. From there visitors can enjoy some of the best views of Mekong River. Wat Hanchey is a splendid complex of temples from the periods of Khmer art history, situated hilltop and overlooking the Mekong. The hill sits next to the river bend with a large island in the middle of mekong river. The view is outstanding from the top and is considered one of the best in Cambodia.
