Wewak is the principal seaport and main town of East Sepik (Papua New Guinea), located on New Guinea island's northern coast. The town has population around 25,000, and is the largest between Jayapura and Madang. Port's pier serves both coastal and international shipping.

The Old Town is located on a small peninsula, while the rest of the city occupies a strip of land between the mountains and the ocean. Not far from Wewak is Cape Wom, where on August 15, 1945 (at the end of WW2) the commander of Japan's 18th Army surrendered to the Australians (6th Division). The wartime airstrip is still there. Nearby is the Japanese Peace Park (cemetery).

The town is the base for day trip boat tours to the 15 islands located off PNG's coast. Tourists often travel by boat to Kairuru Island (popular for its waterfalls and hot springs). Snorkelling, diving and swimming are among the activities in this region. The surrounding reefs and waters feature an abundance of marine life (manta rays, tuna, turtles, sharks) as well as WW2 sunken shipwrecks.

Wewak Harbour is the port serving the town. Its borders are formed by Wewak Point (west), Mission Point (south) and Cape Boram (east). Imperial Japanese 18th Army occupied Wewak Harbour between December 18, 1942, and August 15, 1945. In August 1943, Wewak was heavily bombed by the Americans (5th Air Force) in a series of air raids.
