Review of AIDAcara

Launched in 1996 as ms Clubschiff, AIDAcara is the oldest of all AIDA Cruises vessels, followed by AIDAvita and AIDAaura.

History - construction & ownership

AIDA Cruises is a German cruise line that is British-American owned and based in Rostock (Germany). Founded originally as Deutsche Seereederei, in the 1960s the company entered cruise industry. In 2000, AIDA Cruises was purchased by P&O Princess Cruises. After in 2003 Carnival Corporation and P&O Princess formed Carnival Corporation & plc, the executive control of AIDA was transferred to Costa Cruises, responsible for Carnival Group European brands.AIDAcara cruise ship

The 38,557-ton, 1,186-passenger cruise ship AIDAcara is ready for fun and relax. She is a family-friendly resort-class ship and is among the smaller ones in the company (still large enough for amenities like a salon, SPA and mini-golf). AIDAcara is the first of its kind in AIDA Cruise Line fleet and very innovative about the “club ship” idea. She was built in 1996 in England and appeals mostly to passengers from Germany.

Shortly before her birthday on June 7, AIDAcara was given a beauty makeover, and is looking splendid for the big 20th anniversary. The cruise ship was christened on June 7, 1996 in Rostock, by Christiane Herzog. The first ship of AIDA Cruises fleet triggered a revolution in cruise market. Following the scheduled stay in dry dock January 26-February 6, 2016, at NAVANTIA Shiprepairs in Cadiz, AIDAcara is now back with even more appealing offers. Apart from routine maintenance work, various refurbishment work was carried out. The guest cabins are newly resplendent. 1,800 m² of new carpeting was laid in the public areas. 12,000 m² of the surface of the ship above and below the waterline was repainted. The new highlights on board include the newly designed Pool Bar (upper deck), and Calypso Bar with outdoor seating area on Deck 9. The Anytime Bar was also refurbished, with its dancefloor redesigned.

The Body & Soul area received new cardio equipment. March 7 will see the premiere of the “cardioscan” on board AIDAcara. The diagnosis tool allows passengers to analyze their cardiac system, metabolism and physical make-up. The cardioscan will also be phased in on the other ships of AIDA fleet. AIDA Store located on Deck 8 presents the popular brand GAASTRA in a new store concept. The jewelry area was redesigned and is now offering items from the Danish brand, Bering, for the first time. A height-adjustable photo kiosk was added to the existing digital photo stations at the Photoshop, and it can be operated with ease by kids and wheelchair-users.

Cruise itinerary program

AIDAcara itinerary program is based on round-trip Canary Islands cruises from Gran Canaria, Baltic and Norwegian sea voyages sailing out of Kiel, Germany.

Cabins

Most AIDAcara staterooms are 150-185-sq.foot Oceanview rooms (342). There are a total of 590 staterooms in 16 categories. The largest aboard AIDAcara are the Premium Suites (605 ft2).

Dining options - Food & Drinks

AIDAcara restaurants are three: two main – the Calypso (named after a personage from Greek mythology - a nymph who occupied on the island of Ogygia, and detained Odysseus for several years) and Markt, offering open-seating buffet. The extra-tariff Rossini is a-la-carte choice and includes waiter service and near-gourmet food with good quality. There are no strict dress codes, or fixed dining times. Basic beverages, including house wines and beer, are free of charge during meals at the buffet restaurants. There are also several beverage packages that may be bought at reduced rates.

Follows the complete list of AIDAcara restaurants and food bars.

  • Rossini (specialty, dinner-only restaurant at surcharge, reservations required; offers waiter service and 6-course a-la-carte menu)
  • Markt Restaurant (complimentary main dining room; self-service buffet restaurant with a variety of food stations and a small terrace)
  • Calypso Restaurant (the second main dining room; complimentary buffet restaurant with indoor/outdoor seating).

Entertainment options - Fun & Sport

No casino is available onboard AIDAcara, but a swimming pool, Body & Soul SPA and Fit & Fun fitness are provided and they’re quite wide for this kind size of vessel. AIDAcara golf area with indoor putting green & golf simulator is a plus. The AIDAcara theatre (called Das Theater by Germans), the largest area onboard, and the full-width huge AIDA Bar & Anytime Disco will make you feel full of life. A lot of deck space is available for walkers, volleyball and basketball fans.AIDAcara cruise ship

  • The AIDAcara cruise ship is the first ever ship of AIDA Kreutzfahrten. The vessel was built as "Club Ship" (Clubschiff in German) for Deutsche Seetouristik (Arkona Reisen), and was launched under its AIDA name in 1996. After P&O Cruises transferred the ship in 1999, it became part of AIDA Cruises, and was renamed "AIDAcara" (2001). In 2005, the ship underwent refurbishment in order to increase the number of passenger cabins.
  • Fun fact is, that AIDAcara is the first cruise ship in the world offering the innovative concept "club ship". As size, she is among the smallest in the fleet, very much family-friendly, and Das Theater is the largest area on board. AIDA Cruises Cara ship also offers a biking station and her own supply of bicycles for shore excursions in ports of call.
  • The onboard language is German, as most of AIDA cruise ship passengers are Germans and German-speaking Europeans (Austrians, Swiss).
