MS Stena Nordica ferry is a Ro-Pax passenger vessel operated by the Sweden-based company STENA LINE. The ship has a max capacity of 450 passengers and 375 cars (or 122 trailers). The vessel was launched in 2000 and currently operates on the Wales UK-Ireland ferry route Holyhead-Dublin (crossing time 3 hours) with 28 weekly crossings.

Prior to July 2023, the cruise ship operated the Sweden-Poland route Karlskrona-Gdynia/Gdansk (crossing time 10 hours) with 17 weekly crossings.

Pets on the ship

Pets (dogs, cats, and ferrets) can be ferried on all STENA ships, but some requirements depend on the itinerary (destination).

  • All ships have a dog toilet.
  • At all times during the voyage, dogs must be leashed and muzzled, and never left alone.
  • Guide dogs travel for free and are allowed on all passenger decks and in the owners' cabin (but must wear a harness or jacket).

All animals are subject to the UK Pet Travel scheme rules and must be at least 15 weeks old. EU pet passports and microchips are required. Car passengers can ferry up to 5 animals (per vehicle). These cars receive a colored hanger (placed on the windscreen rear-view mirror until customs are cleared in each port). Pets in vehicles must remain inside at all times. Foot passengers are allowed up to 5 pets, but the pre-booking of an onboard kennel is required. Children traveling with an animal must be 16 years old. Stena Nordica ferry Wiki

The vessel (IMO number 9215505) is Japan-built (at MHI-Mitsubishi's Shimonoseki Shipyard) under hull number 1068. The ship was launched (floated out from drydock) on August 18, 2000 (under the name "European Ambassador"), delivered on January 8, 2001, and renamed to "Stena Nordica" in 2004. The ferry was originally built for P&O FERRIES (P&O Irish Sea division) and initially deployed on the UK England-Ireland route Liverpool-Dublin. For P&O, European Ambassador also served the routes Mostyn-Dublin and Cherbourg-Dublin (weekends-only roundtrips, with winter-only calls to Rosslare Europort).

In 2004, after the Mostyn-Dublin service was terminated, the ship was sold to STENA LINE. Renamed Stena Nordica, in May 2004 the liner started the Karlskrona-Gdynia service following a major drydock refit. The project also included adding new vehicle ramps (to expedite car loading/unloading operations). Due to major drydock refurbishments scheduled for Stena Seatrader and Stena Europe, Nordica was used as a substitute vessel in 2008, respectively, in January (Holyhead-Dublin) and February (Fishguard-Rosslare).

In March 2009, Stena Nordica entered drydock (GBP 2,2 million refit project) during which were redesigned and upgraded all passenger areas and were added new bars and lounges, the Stena Plus Lounge, Food City Restaurant, the exclusive Truck Drivers Lounge. The ship also received new seatings and flooring.

In 2013, Nordica was chartered to P&O for the Scotland-Ireland route Cairnryan-Belfast. In 2015-2016, DFDS Seaways chartered Stena Nordica (renamed to "Malo Seaways") for the England-France route Dover-Calais (replacing DFDS' ship Dieppe Seaways/Stena Superfast X). In summer 2016, the ship was chartered to GNV-Grandi Navi Veloci for Mediterranean services. After the GNV charter, Stena Nordica was temporarily deployed on the Germany-Latvia route Travemunde-Liepaja.

In January-April 2017, the cruise ship replaced Stena Horizon on the Ireland-France route Rosslare-Cherbourg. The current Karlskrona-Gdynia service is operated since 2018 (October 5) after the vessel was reflagged from UK (London) to Bahamas (Nassau).

The ship is powered by four WARTSILA marine diesel engines (two model 18V38 + two model 12V38) with total power output 39,7 MW. The propulsion system is based on two twin 4-bladed CPPs (controllable pitch propellers) plus two Kawasaki bow thrusters (total power output 2,52 MW).

Cruise ship's freight cargo capacity is 1950 lanemeters, which allows it to accommodate 375 cars or 122 trailers (or a combination of vehicles-trucks).

The ferry's namesake is the 1994-built icebreaker MSV Nordica.
