Review of RV Kalay Pandaw
RV Kalay Pandaw ship is one of Pandaw's smaller vessels (K-class fleet). The riverboat's shallow draft allows it to navigate along hard to reach sections of Burma's Upper Chindwin River - the largest tributary of River Irrawaddy. The boat was named after the town of Kalay (aka Karlay) located on Myittha River, upstream from Mandalay and Monywa. Myittha is a tributary of River Chindwin.
The ship has one owner suite (sized 42 m2 / 450 ft2). This accommodation is the only one located on the upper deck. Its teak floor and wood paneled walls give a rich ambiance, complemented by easy chairs, vanity table, convertible double bed. The large French window and wrap-around design give panoramic viewing.
Main deck's 4 identical cabins are equally sized (17 m2 / 180 ft2). All staterooms are with twin beds (some converting), French windows, air-conditioning, safes and desks, as well as hairdryers, slippers and bathrobes in the en-suite bathrooms. An onboard laundry is available, too.
Like on similar Pandaw river cruise ships, Kalay Pandaw passengers are able to spend leisure time on the aft part of the covered upper deck. Meals are served bistro-style indoor and outdoor on the upper deck. Breakfast is buffet style, but preceded by light bites, tea and coffee for early risers. Lunch is served either buffet style or sit-down, while dinners are 4-course affairs. Pandaw's food ingredients are locally sourced and always fresh.
Domestic beers, spirits, soft drinks, coffee and tea are complimentary and served on the upper deck at the bar/library lounge. An open-bridge policy is in place. Wi-Fi is slow because of the remote regions traveled. However, some riverside ports along the cruise itinerary feature Internet shops.
Note: You can see the CruiseMapper's list of all river cruise ships and riverboats in the "itinerary" section of our River Cruises hub. All companies and their fleets are listed there.
