  • ship collision - 2012 (with Urd ferry in port Travemunde)

08 May 2012Ship Collision / Allision

(Nils Holgersson) On May 8, 2012, while entering port Travemunde, the ship collided with the Scandlines-owned ferry Urd. The accident was due to human error as Nils Holgersson's bridge crew failed to turn sufficiently. No injuries were reported.

The collision resulted in a 16 m2 (170 ft2) hole into Urd's hull, including vertical tear below the waterline. The following investigation established that Nils Holgersson's engine wasn't in "harbor mode", which seriously limited its maneuverability and prevented the Captain from reversing the vessel. Sustaining only minor hull damages, Nils Holgersson was taken to Landskrona (Sweden), while the heavily damaged Urd remained in Travemunde for emergency repairs.
