Celukan Bawang is a cruise port located approx 40 km (25 mi) west of Singaraja (northern Bali Island) on a well-protected bay harbour. Nearby is Lovina Beach - a stretch of quiet, black-sand beaches. Singaraja is Bali's 2nd largest city (population over 80,000). Between 1849-1953 it was the Dutch colonial administrative capital for Bali Kingdom (Bali Island and Lesser Sunda Islands).

Port Celukan Bawang (locode IDCEB) allows cruise ship passengers to discover a different and not crowded part of the island, as well as fascinating natural and cultural Balinese sites. The coast around the seaport is sloppy and rocky. The port is operated the whole year-round. Its anchorage area and the harbor are well sheltered from winds and swells.

Points of interest in Celukan Bawang include:

  • Lovina beach (30 min from Celukan Bawang) - Away from the mass tourism sites, Lovina Beach offers visitors the chance to relax on the black sand beaches with nearby restaurants and boutiques.
  • Singaraja (1 hour from Celukan Bawang) - is ranked Bali's 2nd largest city. It has kept traces of the colonialism period. Gedond Kirtya Library and Beleleng Museum, composed of 3 small houses will give the opportunity for tourists to see a collection of ancient Balenese books called "Lontar", made from leaves of the palm.
  • Pura Ulun Danu Bratan Temples (2 hours drive from Celukan Bawang) - this Hindu-Buddhist temples complex consists of two temples dedicated to Dewi Danu (goddess of water), which are built on small isles.

In October 2018, GHK (Genting Hong Kong) via its subsidiary Genting Cruise Lines signed an MoU (Memorandum of Understanding) with PT Pelabuhan Indonesia III (PERSERO) for developing the cruise ship tourism industry in Indonesia.

  • The 2018-signed MoU was the second between both parties, following an initial agreement (signed in April 2017) and the successful homeport deployment of MS Genting Dream in North Bali. The 2018-Oct MoU highlighted the joint initiative to develop cruise terminal facilities at Celukan Bawang, allowing berthing of liners with LOA length up to 350 m (1150 ft).
  • Both parties also explored possible seaport developments of other PERSERO-operated ports across Indonesia.
  • Genting Cruise Lines managed the GHK-owned companies Crystal Cruises, Star Cruises and Dream Cruises.

Celukan Bawang cruise terminal

Celukan Bawang cruise port has a large wharf (ship docking structure). This is Bali Island's main cargo port, trading in cement and timber from the Indonesian islands Java and Borneo. For now, most cruise ships to Bali Island dock at Benoa Harbour.

As the anchorage is big enough, port's hinterland will be soon developed. Large vessels anchor near the entrance channel (min water depth 50 m / 165 ft). There is no pontoon in place for the moment permitting operations of disembarkation from cruise vessels at anchor. However, Pelindo III which manages Celukan Bawang's harbour has the expertise and is prepared to install tendering facilities if required.
