Kota Kinabalu (fka Jesselton) Malaysia is a port city and Sabah State's capital. The city is located on the northwestern coast of Borneo Island, with Mt Kinabalu to the east and Tunku Abdul Rahman National Park to the west. The city has urban population over 450,000 (including the districts Penampang and Putatan) and metro population over 650,000.

Borneo's second-largest Malaysian port city is Sandakan (population around 150,000, metro over 400,000) and is located on the island's eastern coast. Other Malaysian Borneo ports are Bintulu and Kuching.

Kota Kinabalu is among Malaysia's most popular travel destinations and a gateway for tourists to Borneo Island. The city is also a major commercial and industrial centre and one of Malaysia's fastest-growing. Its economy is heavily based on industry and manufacturing, commerce, services, banking and insurance, maritime shipping. Kota Kinabalu Industrial Park (in Sepanggar) is a planned industrial and commercial complex. Many renown international conferences are held annually at Sutera Harbour Resort.

The city is connected via 4 main highways and is served by Kota Kinabalu International Airport (main hub for the domestic carrier Malaysia Airlines). The airport has 2 terminals and by passenger traffic is ranked Malaysia's second-largest (after Kuala Lumpur) Direct international flights connect to large cities in Asia (China, Korea, Japan, Indonesia, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, Philippines, Brunei) and also with Australia (Perth).
