Liepaja is a Baltic Sea port and city in western Latvia, which by population (around 70,000) is ranked country's 3rd largest - following Riga (capital) and Daugavpils. STENA LINE operates regularly scheduled Germany-Latvia crossings (between Travemunde-Lubeck and Liepaja) with the cargo ferry Urd and the cruise ferry Stena Nordica.

While the port is ice-free, the city experiences constant breeze from the sea, ranking Liepaja as Latvia's windiest city. This is why nearby was constructed country's largest wind farm - consisting of 33 German / Enercon-made turbines).

In 1967 (when Latvia was part of the USSR / Soviet Union), Port Liepaja was completely closed to commercial traffic. It was re-opened in 1991 (after the fall of the USSR). The country's largest naval fleet is homeported here. Facilities also include Baltic's largest warehouses (for ammunition and weapons).

Beside the seaport, the city is served by well-developed transport network (mainly buses and mini-busses), single 2-way tram line (running northeast to southwest), railway (linking to Jelgava and Riga, also connecting the seaport), northward railway (to Ventspils), 2 highways (A9, A11) connecting (city and the port) to the rest of Latvia - A9 northwest towards Riga, and A11 south to Lithuania (Port Klaipėda and Palanga International Airport).

Liepaja International Airport (one of the country's 3) is outside the city (near Cimdenieki). It serves mainly domestic/charter flights, and airBaltic (state-owned airline) connects to Riga.

Port Liepāja has 3 main parts.

  • Winter harbor (Trade channel) serves small-sized fishing vessels and medium-sized cargo ships.
  • To the north of the Trade Channel is Main Port (with breakwaters separating it from the Baltic Sea). It has the capacity to handle large vessels (box ships and cruise liners) and ferries.
  • To the north of Main Port is Karosta harbor (former military harbor) which is now used for ship repair and other commercial services.
  • The port also has moorings for yachts and leisure boats entering through Trade channel and berthing almost in downtown.
