The town is located on a horseshoe-shaped bay and well-known as a tourism travel destination. Its best-known attraction is the palm-fringed esplanade (waterfront promenade street) lined with boutique shops, cafes, and bars overlooking the harbor. The beach is adjacent to several large hotels and a camping site. As a cruise port, Makarska is visited by mainly smaller-sized ships and luxury mega-yachts.
