Malmo is the largest city of Sweden's Scania county, The city has population around 350,000 (metro over 700,000), ranking it the country's 3rd largest - following the capital Stockholm and Goteborg (Gothenburg). The Malmo metropolis together with Oresund (Oresundsregionen) are home to almost 4 million people. Oresund is a transnational metro region located around Oresund Strait, with two metro cities located on either side (Malmo Sweden and Copenhagen Denmark). Both cities are connected via Oresund Bridge (length 7, 8 km / 4,87 ml) and also by regularly scheduled ferry service on the HH Ferry route (between Elsinore Denmark and Helsingborg Sweden).

Malmo city underwent a major transformation since Oresund Bridge's opening (in July 2000) and the Malmo University (founded in 1998). As Scania's commercial centre, the city attracts leading European companies specializing in the biotech, pharmaceutical, IT and hi-tech sectors. Among the largest companies headquartered in Malmo Sweden are Skanska (heavy constructions), ISS Facility Service (hospital services), EON Sverige (electricity), Sydsvenskan (newspaper media), Pagen (bakery), Seavus (software), Kockums AB (shipbuilding yard owned by Saab Group). The city also features numerous historic buildings and nature parks.

As transportation, Malmo is served by Oresund Line trains (crossing the Oresund Bridge every 20 min) to Copenhagen (travel time approx 20 min). There are also trains to Stockholm, Goteborg and Kalmar (also crossing the Oresund Bridge) and stopping at Copenhagen Airport. A new railway (City Tunnel) was opened in December 2010. It runs south from Malmo Central Station to Hyllie Meadow, then connects to the Oresund rail line. Most flights to Malmo are served by the Copenhagen Airport, but the city also has its own airport (Malmo Airport) for mainly domestic and private charter flights.

As the city boasts approx 410 km (250 mml) of bike paths, around 40% of its commuting is by bicycles. The city's The motorway system is incorporated with Oresund Bridge via route E20 (over the bridge) connecting with route E6 (following Sweden's west coast to Gothenburg and further north through Norway to Kirkenes).

Malmo port has 2 harbours, one of which is Scandinavia's largest car import port. The port also features 2 boat / yachting marinas - Limhamn Marina (publicly owned) and Lagunen (privately owned).
