Milford Sound is the jewel of Fiordland National Park, situated on the southwestern coast of New Zealand's South Island. Relentless glacial ice forged its rugged grandeur thousands of years ago. Sheer faced granite walls soar 1200 m skyward, while white-plumed waterfalls tumble from lush hanging valleys into the glassy waters. Mitre Peak rears over 5,000 ft into the mist.

Most cruise ships enter this 13 km (8 miles) long fiord to admire the scenery and then turn round back to sea. Some may tender cruise passengers or dock at the little town of Milford. The sea approach can be sometimes rough, the mountains tops hidden in mist and the rainfall intense. But even in these conditions the unique effect of hundreds of waterfalls is still impressing.

The small Milford Sound city is a scattered collection of buildings and facilities including an airport, cruise terminal, fishing harbour, post office and two hotels. Sights to be reached on foot include the grave of Donald Sutherland, the Lookout and Lady Bowen Falls. Boat tours take visitors to the main waterfalls and seal colony. Called by the Maori Piopiotahi (single thrush), the first European is believed to be John Grono who named it in 1823 after his home town, Milford Haven. The earliest settler was Donald Sutherland in 1877. Due to its natural beauty, Milford Sound has been nominated a world heritage region. From here it's possible to visit Te Anau Caves and Fiordland National Park.

The largest ever cruise ship in Milford Sound was RCI's Ovation of the Seas. The 168,670-ton vessel with around 6000 passengers and crew sailed the waters of Doubtful Sound, Dusky Sound and Milford Sound on December 22, 2016, en-route from Hobart Tasmania to Dunedin NZ. However, due to bad weather, Dunedin (Port Chalmers) was skipped and the ship continued directly to Wellington NZ.
