Motril is a port town on the Mediterranean coast in Spain's Granada Province, as well as one of the cruise ports to Granada City - together with Malaga. By population (around 62,000) it is ranked Granada's second-largest (after Granada City/province's capital). The town is near Guadalfeo River and approx 69 km (43 mi) from Granada City.

The Andalusia region's economy is based on greenhouse agriculture (avocado, guava, mango, banana, custard apple) while the town's economy is largely based on its sugarcane refineries. Other large industries are commerce, commercial fishing/fisheries, shipping (cargo and passengers/ferries), domestic tourism. The "Preindustrial Sugar Cane Museum" is its best-known tourist attraction.

Port Motril (locode ESMOT) is a fishing and ferry port, and the city's second most important industry (after the paper industry). Papermill Lecta produces ~250 tons of paper annually.

Regular ferries link Motril with Melilla (Spanish Morocco), with travel time ~5 hours. The service is provided by three companies (BALEARIA, NAVIERA ARMAS, FRS Iberia), each offering 2 weekly crossings. NAVIERA ARMAS additionally links to Al Hoceima (Morocco/3 weekly crossings) and to Nador (Morocco/6 weekly crossings).
