Ponce is a port city in the southern part of Puerto Rico (one of USA's unincorporated territories), with population around 170,000, ranking it Puerto Rico's 2nd largest city (after San Juan).
- The city serves as governmental seat of the same-named municipality and regional center for federal government and commonwealth agencies.
- The municipality is located in the island's southern coastal region, bordered (on the south) by Caribbean Sea. Ponce Pueblo district (downtown city area) is shared by several barrios. It is approx 5 km (3 ml) inland from the coast. The municipality is Puerto Rico's 2nd largest by land area.
- Most visited by tourists is the downtown area, containing most of the city's attractions. In 2007, the city was visited by over 6,000 cruise ship tourists.
- Ponce is famous for its many museums, libraries, art galleries, nature parks, hundreds of historical buildings (residences, estates, schools, bridges) and annually held carnivals and festivals.
