Pulau Komodo Island is one of Indonesia's 17,508 islands. Komodo is located between the neighboring islands Flores (to the east) and Sumbawa (to the west), and belongs to East Nusa Tenggara province. The island is known worldwide as the habitat of the Komodo Dragon - the world's largest lizard, named after the island. These lizards grow to a max length of 3 m (10 ft) and weigh up to 70 kg (150 lb).

The island covers a total area of approx 390 km2 (151 mi2) and has population around 2,000. Most of the inhabitants are descendants of former convicts exiled here, who mixed with Sulawesi's Bugis.

Pulau Komodo is part of Lesser Sunda Islands. It forms part of the Komodo National Park (1980-founded). The Komodo park includes 3 larger islands (Komodo, Padar, Rinca) plus 26 smaller isles. It covers a total area of approx 1733 km2 (669 mi2) of which the land area is 603 km2 (233 mi2).

The island is a renowned diving destination. Komodo is most famous for its unique fauna. Besides the Komodo Dragon, the island's wildlife viewing features also include Javan deer, banded pigs, water buffalo, macaques monkeys, civets, cockatoo parrots.

The island features a pink-sand beach that is one of only 7 in the world. Its sand appears pink as it is a mixture of white and red sand.

The island is served by Labuan Bajo Port and the Komodo Airport. The number of cruise ships to Komodo Island increases with each year. In 2016, the total number of ship calls was 24. Most cruises are with roundtrip departures from ports in Australia (mainly from Brisbane Queensland and Sydney NSW). The itineraries generally combine Australian ports with Indonesia.

The island is often visited by smaller-sized and luxury ships operating on World Cruise itineraries.
