Roermond is a Meuse River/Rur-Roer River cruise port and city in the Netherlands' Limburg province, with population around 60,000. Meuse/Maas River originates in France and flows through Belgium and Holland, and (via Rhine-Meuse-Scheldt delta) drains into the North Sea. Riverboats dock at Roermond Marina from where cruise tourists are bused to downtown.
Roermond received town rights in the 13th century (1231) and is one of Holland's historically important towns. The downtown is a conservation area dominated by two churches - Roermond Munsterkerk (13th century) and Saint Christopher Cathedral (early-15th century), and numerous listed as historically important Medieval buildings and monuments, including Cuypershuis (museum), City Hall, Carolus Chapel, Indiemonument (National East Indies Monument), Kasteeltje Hattem (hotel and restaurant), Rattentoren (14th-century watchtower).
Roermond was part of Guelders/Gueldres County (later duchy 1180-1543 AD) of the Holy Roman Empire (800-1806 AD). In 1213, the town was completely destroyed by Holy Roman Emperor Otto IV (1175-12-18), soon rebuilt, and granted town rights (its own seal/reign/mint) in 1231. In the period 1543-1702, Guelders was part of the Spanish/Habsburg Netherlands.
