Ruhen Stadt is an Aller River/Weser River cruise port and town in Germany's Lower Saxony state (Niedersachsen's Landkreis Gifhorn district) with population around 6,000. Gemeinde Ruhen (municipality) is divided into three districts: Ruhen (population ~4000), Brechtorf (~1200) and Eischott (under 1000). Brechtorf is 1 km to the south, Eischott is 2 km to the west from Ruhen.
The town of Ruhen is surrounded by lowlands on three sides. To the northeast is Giebelmoor (nature reserve). Part of the municipal boundary forms the Niedersachsen-Sachsen-Anhalt border. Through the east of the municipality runs Mittellandkanal/Midland Canal (Germany's principal east-west inland waterway) linking to France and Switzerland, Benelux (Belgium, Holland, Luxembourg), Czechia, Poland, Baltic Sea.
River Aller has length approx 215 km (134 mi) and flows through the states Saxony-Anhalt (Sachsen-Anhalt) and Lower Saxony. Aller is an eastern (and largest) tributary of Weser River. Aller's last 117 km (73 mi) form the Lower Aller Bundeswasserstrasse 1 (BWaStr/federal waterway). During the 1960s, Aller River was extensively widened and dyked (in some parts) to provide flood control. Aller's section in Landkreis Gifhorn (approx length 20 km / 12 mi) is its natural bed, which explains why the river meanders so much through the valley.
As cruise port, Ruhen was added in the 2021 schedule of the ship Katharina von Bora (2000-built). The riverboat is owned by Mystic Cruises and operated via the subsidiary company and travel brand Nicko Cruises (fleet).
