Saarlouis is a Saar River/Moselle River cruise port and town in Germany's Saarland state (Urban district) with population around 35,000. Saarlouis is directly linked to Saarbrucken and Trier with hourly-scheduled trans on Saarstrecke (Saar Railway) connecting the states Saarland and Rhineland-Palatinate. Highway A-620 (autobahn) connects to Saarbrucken, while highway A-8 connects to Luxembourg.

The town was founded in the late-17th-century as a star-shaped/hexagonal fortification (the fortress Sarre-Louis) named after Louis XIV (1638-1715, King of France between 1643-1715). The fortress was constructed in 1680 following the Treaties of Nijmegen (1678-79) signed in Nijmegen (Netherlands) that ended several wars between France, Holland, Spain, Sweden, Denmark, Germany (Brandenburg, Munster) and the Holy Roman Empire (800-1806). The French king visited the new fortress in 1683 and granted its coat of arms and heraldic motto.

During the French Revolution (1789-99), the town was renamed Sarre-Libre, but in 1810 returned back to Saarlouis. In 1815, the town and the entire Saargebiet region became German (Kingdom of Prussia / 1701-1918). After WW1 (1914-1918), the town became French again. In the period 1936-1945, the town was part of Germany and named Saarlautern. After WW2 (1939-1945), the Saarland region was again part of France. In 1957 it was reunited with Germany as its 10th federal state.

Current-day city's economy is based on steel production, iron ore mining, chocolate manufacturing and the automotive industry (Ford Motor Company has here a plant producing the models Focus and Kuga). Saarlouis-Roden is Germany's 8th largest inland industrial port.

As cruise port, Saarlouis is included in the schedule of Nicko Cruises riverboat Casanova (2001-built). Next tables show ship's 7-day itineraries as call port sequences.
