The melodious name of Surabaya belies the true nature of the city - a hot, dirty, noisy industrial hub on Java's northeast coast, East Java's largest metropolis and its provincial capital. With an area of 350.5 km2 (135.3 ml2) supporting a city population of more than 2.8 million, Surabaya is in fact the 2nd largest city in the country, a modern centre for agriculture, trade and manufacturing - its din and bustle a sharp contrast to a serene agrarian countryside around it.

Port Surabaya (Java, Indonesia) cruise port

Surabaya is alleged to have been established on the spot where the legendary battle between a crocodile (BUAYA) and a shark (SURA) took place, Surabaya has been the chief harbour and commercial centre of East Java since the fall of 14th century Majapahit Kingdom. The present population of Surabaya is about 5 million with 90% Muslim (primarily Madurese and Javanese). The several thousand making up foreign community are either involved in development projects or missionaries. In Surabaya cruisers can see the Bull Races, visit Madura island or take a volcano tour.

Suramadu Bridge (its name derives from Surabaya-Madura) connects Madura Island and Surabaya over Madura Strait. A 16km highway will be built from Suramadu Bridge to MIS-C (Madura International Seaport-City) in Pernajuh village, Kocah district, Bangkalan, Madura for Rp.60 billion (US$ 7 billion). The container port was built in order to ease the burden on the overloaded Tanjung Perak Port of Surabaya.

Tanjung Perak is the city's main port and one of Indonesia's busiest cargo ports. Although much of the transhipped cargo is administered, the port is used to carry international cargo vessels up to 2nd generation, max 1,000 TEU ships. Currently, Tanjung Perak is dredged to 14m depth to serve 10,000 TEUs 5th generation ships (finished in mid-2015), while 16 m depth with width 200 m can serve 15,000 TEUs or 7th generation vessels (finished in mid-2016). In 2016 a dry bulk port was built with 250 m piers accommodating up to 14 LWS international ships. The drybulk terminal occupies 26 hectares plus a supporting area of 36 hectares for a total cargo capacity ~20 million tons.

Surabaya cruise terminal

Surabaya's Port Tanjung Perak allows max draft 14 m / 46 ft and has a dedicated cruise terminal. Ships dock in Tanjung Perak (city's industrial area). Passenger transportation to the city is either by taxis or cruise line provided bus shuttles.
