Stockholm is taking a leading role in the global effort to reduce emissions. The city has achieved a significant milestone by becoming one of the first EU cities to have its climate plan approved by the European Commission. Ports of Stockholm, a signatory company to the Climate City Contract, is actively participating in this initiative.

Stockholm's ambitious goal is to become climate-positive by 2030. The European Commission assessed the climate plans of Stockholm and 9 other European cities, awarding them EU Mission Label status. Stockholm proudly holds the distinction of being the first EU city to receive this approval.

The Climate City Contract is a collaborative effort between the City of Stockholm and eleven local companies, along with Region Stockholm, Stockholm University, KTH Royal Institute of Technology, and Karolinska Institutet.

Jens Holm, Chair of the Board of Stockholms Hamn AB, underscores the significance of this achievement for Stockholm as a city and its commitment to environmentally responsible shipping. It is a critical step towards the city's ambitious goal of achieving climate positivity by 2030.

To realize the vision of a climate-positive Stockholm, Ports of Stockholm has adopted a proactive and strategic approach to sustainable port operations and shipping. Their climate-related objectives include:

  • Reducing greenhouse gas emissions from shipping customers within Ports of Stockholm's port areas.
  • Achieving zero emissions of fossil energy carbon dioxide from Ports of Stockholm's truck operations by 2025.
  • Transitioning Ports of Stockholm's operations to be entirely fossil-free by 2030.

Ports of Stockholm is facilitating sustainable shipping by expanding onshore power capabilities strategically, offering environmentally differentiated port fee incentives, and engaging in close dialogue with relevant stakeholders regarding alternative fuels and new green technologies.

In addition to these initiatives, Ports of Stockholm has implemented measures to minimize their own environmental impact, such as developing an energy-saving program and setting transparent targets for the use of renewable fuels.
