Greg Mortimer, the explorer who established Aurora Expeditions in the early 1990s, was recently medevaced by helicopter from the newly commissioned expedition vessel Douglas Mawson after what was described by the company as a medical episode while he was serving as the ship’s expedition leader.
A representative for Aurora Expeditions indicated that his condition was stable at the time of the evacuation. As a precaution, the ship altered course to facilitate the transportation to a medical facility in New Zealand for further evaluation and care.
The company's statement underscored that the safety and well-being of all aboard remained paramount and noted that additional information would be provided as appropriate, while also asking for Mr Mortimer’s privacy to be respected during the ongoing situation.
