The Japan-made vessel was constructed at Nagasaki Shipyard by MHI-Mitsubishi Heavy Industries) and launched (floated out from drydock) on April 6, 1991. The Inaugural Cruise started on December 24. The ship was originally named "MS Asuka" and owned (between 1991-2006) by the Japanese shipping company NYK-Line (Nippon Yusen Kaisha). Since 2006, MS Amadea is operated by Phoenix Reisen under charter from the German shipowner Amadea Shipping Company GmbH.
