01 August 2022Coast Guard Medevacs

On August 1, 2022, a 23-year-old female passenger was medevaced from the ship navigating in Alaska's Tracy Arm Fjord, approx 40 NM (~46 mi / 74 km) southeast of Juneau.

For the medical evacuation, from Coast Guard Air Station Sitka was dispatched a Sikorsky MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter, arriving on the scene at 11:30 am local time (19:30 UTC). The woman was hoisted and flown to Juneau.

CG Sector Juneau's command duty officer commented that the mountainous terrain made the VHF radio communication with the vessel difficult.

At 10:11 am (18:11 UTC), the CG Sector Juneau received the call for assistance from the Alaska State Troopers, reporting a cruise passenger experiencing anaphylactic shock symptoms. The rescue helicopter for the medevac was diverted to the scene from a training flight.

At the time of the accident, the cruise ship was on a 10-day "Southeast Alaska Cruise" (itinerary July 27 - Aug 3, roundtrip from Juneau) with call ports/destinations Skagway, Haines, Glacier Bay, Frederick Sound, Petersburg, Mitkof Island, and Tracy Arm Fjord.
