  • ship collision - 2019 (with a car-carrier near Nijmegen Holland)

20 March 2019Ship Collision / Allision

On March 20, 2019, at ~4 am, while navigating on Waal River near Nijmegen (the Netherlands' Gelderland province), the riverboat collided with a car-carrier (cargo ship). The cruise ship was evacuated and to the site were dispatched units of RWS-Rijkswaterstaat (an agency of Holland's Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management) and local fire brigades.

Due to the collision, the cruise ship (with 160 passengers + 80 crew) was pushed into a railway bridge (over Waal River) and hit a pillar. The second collision (allision with the pillar) resulted in hull damages (hole) and a fire, which was quickly extinguished. River bridge's traffic was temporarily halted for a structural integrity check.

No injuries were reported. All passengers were offloaded, while the crew stayed on the ship. The cargo vessel sustained only minor damages (hull scratches).
