02 October 2013Ship Collision / Allision

(Viking River Cruises Viking Sun / pier collision) On October 2, 2013, the riverboat Viking Sun sustained serious damages in a pier collision accident. The ship struck a dock station near Strasbourg, France.

The collision resulted in a 3 m / 10 ft long tear in the hull. Passengers were offered the options of a full refund and return home or future Viking river cruise credit and continue on a modified bus travel itinerary. Most of them chose the latter, continuing on their Viking vacation.

Note: Actually, this type of marine accident is called “allision” (striking a fixed object) as opposed to “collision” (striking another vessel).
