  • grounding - 2007 (in Svartsundet, Norway)
  • pier collision/allision - 2017 (Risoyhamn, Norway)

29 March 2017Ship Collision / Allision

On March 29, 2017, while maneuvering for docking at Risoyhamn (Andoy, Nordland Norway), the cruise ship collided with the concrete pier. The accident resulted in serious damages to the wharf and also hull damages to the vessel. The bow was breached (above the waterline) and several steel plates fell through the hole.

Fun fact is that the hull hole looked like a shark's jaw.

No injuries or water ingress and pollution were reported. The vessel berthed shortly after the collision and its seaworthiness was not compromised. For the needed repairs, the ship was out of service through April 12 (departed from Bergen).

Note: Actually, this type of marine accident is called “allision” (striking a fixed object) as opposed to “collision” (striking another vessel).

09 May 2007Ship Grounding

(CruiseMapper emailed report from Oliver Edvard Natas)

On the 9th of May 2007, around 5 pm, Trollfjord ran aground in Svartsundet, Norway after leaving Trollfjorden northbound, on its way to Storkmarknes.

The ship's Chief Officer, who was OOW, led the vessel through the narrow sound despite the Captain's orders. The reason for this being he lived nearby, and supposedly had local knowledge of the surrounding area.

It was low tide at the time of the grounding.
