- 2018 - Sea Cloud Cruises' first female Captain
|11 April 2018||Other Incidents|
On April 11, 2018, the shipowner promoted Mrs Kathryn Whittaker from Chief Officer to Captain of the vessel. Mrs Whittaker became the world's first Canadian female Captain of a cruise vessel, as well as Sea Cloud Cruises' first female Captain. In 2012-2018, she served as Chief Officer on Sea Cloud II, being responsible for the boat’s security and general maintenance.
Unlike most female cruise ship captains, Kathryn Whittaker comes from a family of no sailors, and her carrier didn't start with a maritime academy. After graduating from Toronto University, she worked for 3 years on tour boats (operating on Toronto Harbor cruises). In 1996, she was employed by Sea Cloud Cruises as a deck hand on the sailing ship. In the following years, she secured her license for Captain through private training and various certifications (chef, first mate, training captain) achieved at maritime schools in Canada.
