Oceanwide Expeditions/fleet achieved a significant milestone for Antarctica 2024-2025 season, with its ice-strengthened cruise ship mv Ortelius successfully navigating the Weddell Sea.

The vessel facilitated helicopter landings at Snow Hill Island, allowing guests to observe the renowned emperor penguin colony, where chicks are in their early stages of development.

On November 14th, Ortelius marked its distinction as the first expedition vessel to access the Weddell Sea this season, despite challenging ice conditions. This achievement underscores Oceanwide’s adaptive operational approach, prioritizing innovation and flexibility to deliver extraordinary guest experiences in Antarctica's remote landscapes.

This voyage is the first of two “Into the Weddell Sea - In Search of the Emperor Penguin” expeditions scheduled for the current Antarctic season. Guests enjoyed unparalleled wildlife encounters at Snow Hill Island, taking advantage of the unique photographic opportunities presented by the emperor penguins and their harsh but captivating habitat.

Given the unpredictable nature of Antarctic ice and weather, Oceanwide Expeditions prepared alternative landing strategies to ensure the itinerary's success. Utilizing Ortelius’ helicopter capability, passengers were able to land directly from the vessel when sea ice restricted closer access. This adaptability highlights Oceanwide’s commitment to overcoming logistical challenges inherent in polar exploration.

Oceanwide’s success in the Weddell Sea builds on its 30-year legacy of polar expedition cruising. The achievement is attributed to the expertise of mv Ortelius’ crew, led by Captain Per Andersson, and the leadership of Expedition Leader Sara Jenner. Their efforts reflect the pioneering spirit of historic Antarctic explorers, pushing operational boundaries to provide guests with intimate encounters with nature.

Oceanwide Expeditions plans to return to the Weddell Sea later this season and in future Antarctic seasons, aiming to offer further opportunities for guests to experience the emperor penguins of Snow Hill Island and other unique polar environments.
