In May 2025, Hurtigruten will reinstate the name MS Finnmarken to the vessel currently operating as MS Otto Sverdrup. This ship, originally launched in 2002 under the name MS Finnmarken, was renamed in 2021 following its transfer to Hurtigruten's expedition division, HX. After returning to Hurtigruten's main fleet in 2024, the vessel will resume its original name, aligning with the company's tradition of naming ships after Norwegian coastal regions, natural phenomena, and notable figures.

Hurtigruten's CEO, Hedda Felin, noted that the name Finnmarken holds historical significance for guests, employees, and the Norwegian coastline. She emphasized the company's anticipation in welcoming passengers aboard a ship bearing a name that honors this legacy.

This will be the third vessel in Hurtigruten's history to carry the name Finnmarken. The first, DS Finnmarken, was launched in 1912 and served for 44 years. The second, MS Finnmarken, built in 1956, remained in service until 1993. Both of these historic ships are preserved at the Hurtigruten Museum in Stokmarknes, where visitors can explore the 1956 vessel in its entirety and view sections of the 1912 steamship.

The current MS Finnmarken will continue operating the North Cape Line, offering voyages between Hamburg and Honningsvag. This route has become a significant part of Hurtigruten's offerings, particularly appealing to the German market. Marius Griego, Vice President of Sales & Marketing for the DACH region at Hurtigruten, highlighted the successful combination of international departures with authentic Norwegian coastal experiences.
