On April 12, 2025, AmaWaterways initiated its inaugural voyage along Colombia's Magdalena River with the launch of the boat AmaMagdalena. This development signifies the company's expansion into South America, complementing its existing operations in Europe, Asia, and Africa.
The AmaMagdalena is a purpose-built river cruise ship designed to accommodate 60 guests. Its construction involved collaboration with Colombian artisans, including woodwork specialists and interior designer Marianna Schlegel Donado of Casa Schlegel Donado from Barranquilla. The ship features twin-balcony staterooms ranging from 237 to 516 square feet, a sun deck pool, fitness room, main restaurant offering regionally inspired Latin American cuisine, and an al fresco dining venue.
The vessel operates two distinct seven-night itineraries: "Magic of Colombia" and "Wonders of Colombia," sailing between Cartagena and Barranquilla. These cruises include excursions to locations such as Santa Cruz de Mompox and Nueva Venecia, providing guests with opportunities to engage with local communities and experience Colombia's cultural heritage. Optional pre- and post-cruise land packages are available in Medellín, Cartagena, and Panama City.
AmaWaterways has emphasized its commitment to sustainable tourism by collaborating with local communities to ensure mutual benefits. The company has also developed nine custom-designed excursion boats to facilitate exploration of secluded areas rich in biodiversity along the river. Onboard experiences include tropical fruit tastings, artisanal chocolate and rum samplings, and Colombian coffee tastings, all aimed at providing a deeper connection to Colombia’s traditions.
A second vessel, the AmaMelodia, is scheduled to commence operations on the Magdalena River in June 2025, further expanding AmaWaterways' presence in the region.
Pricing for the 7-night "Wonders of Colombia" cruise from Cartagena to Barranquilla, departing on October 11, 2025, starts at GBP 4,255 per person for a French Balcony stateroom.
