SeaDream Yacht Club’s SeaDream II made maritime history during its recent call at Bergen, Norway, when it connected to shore power for the first time. Over the course of a 14-hour stay, the yacht ran entirely on local electricity, allowing all engines to be safely shut down—delivering a completely zero-emission port visit.
The ship had been outfitted in 2023 with the necessary shore power equipment, and its sister vessel, SeaDream I, received the same upgrade during a yard period in Lisbon (Portugal) in early 2024—making SeaDream Yacht Club the first luxury cruise operator to retrofit its entire fleet with such capability.
Andreas Brynestad of SeaDream emphasized that visiting some of the planet’s most beautiful harbors carries a duty to preserve them. He welcomed the leadership shown by the Port of Bergen and other forward-thinking ports in adopting shore power facilities, noting the benefit this brings to the yachts, local communities, and the wider environment.
This achievement represents a continuation of SeaDream’s long-standing sustainability journey. The line has been using cleaner marine fuels since 2013, was among the first to eliminate heavy fuel oil, ban single-use plastics, and offer extensive plant-based menus. The new shore power use further reinforces the company's commitment to eco-conscious yachting.
With both yachts now equipped to plug in wherever the infrastructure exists, SeaDream stands ready to deliver silent, emission-free port calls, marking another stride toward more responsible maritime travel.
