Australian entrepreneur Greg Carter, known for co-founding Chimu Adventures and serving on the Mawson’s Huts Foundation board, has established Terra Nova Expeditions, a new venture focused on polar expedition cruises. The company has secured a long-term charter for the former UK Royal Mail Ship (RMS) St Helena, with plans to commence Antarctic voyages in the 2026-2027 season.
Originally constructed in 1989 to service the remote British overseas territory of Saint Helena in the South Atlantic, the St Helena has undergone a significant refurbishment. The US$10.8 million renovation has transformed the vessel into an ice-strengthened 1C-class expedition ship, reducing its passenger capacity from 150 to 98 to enhance comfort and provide a more intimate experience. The ship is now equipped with modern amenities, including a science laboratory and virtual reality headsets to minimize seasickness, catering to travelers seeking an authentic Antarctic adventure.
Terra Nova Expeditions aims to offer budget-conscious travelers immersive polar experiences with a focus on environmental responsibility and scientific engagement. The company has assembled a team of seasoned professionals, including Chief Commercial Officer Beth Mercier, formerly with Quark Expeditions and Hurtigruten; Chief Financial Officer Nick Macciocca, co-founder of Agora Brazil Travel; and General Manager for Brand and Client Experience Andrea Bagi, formerly with Albatros Expeditions.
The inaugural voyages aboard the refurbished RMS St Helena are scheduled to begin in December 2026, offering travelers an opportunity to explore the Antarctic Peninsula and surrounding regions in a unique and sustainable manner. With a commitment to providing authentic, destination-focused experiences, Terra Nova Expeditions is poised to contribute to the growing interest in polar exploration.
