Havila and HAV Group forge agreement for climate-neutral Norwegian coastal fleet

Havila Voyages and HAV Group have formalized a strategic alliance to ensure that the Norwegian Coastal Route fleet — comprising four existing hybrid vessels and planned newbuilds — will maintain at least a climate-neutral profile, with the ultimate ambition of achieving zero emissions. The plan, unveiled at Arendalsuka on August 14th, positions these ships to comply with stringent environmental standards expected in the next contract period.

The proposal sets forth immediate steps to optimize current ferries for minimal emissions using biogas and battery systems, while allowing for future enhancements with green hydrogen or onboard carbon capture technology. A full round voyage—Bergen to Kirkenes and back—over 5,000 nautical miles, is being prepared for a trial this fall, aiming to operate entirely on biogas combined with battery power.

CEO Bent Martini emphasized that the goal of climate neutrality will be the baseline expectation from day one, contingent upon clear environmental mandates from authorities. He reiterated that the required technologies are already available and that sustained political clarity would catalyze investment and innovation within Norway’s maritime industry.

HAV Group expressed confidence in its role in delivering on this transition. Working alongside various Norwegian maritime entities, they aim to preserve domestic value creation through design, construction, and technological integration—all rooted in national expertise and infrastructure.

Norway's ambition for cleaner shipping is long-standing. Havila Voyages has already demonstrated emission-free voyages into protected fjords and targets carbon neutrality by 2028, with zero-emission operations achievable on current ships by 2030.
