MSC Group’s Cruise Division formally broke ground on September 28th on Sandy Cay, a new private island destination under development in The Bahamas adjacent to Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve. Construction is already underway, with the destination scheduled to open in 2028.
Bahamian government representatives joined MSC executives and project partners for the groundbreaking ceremony, marking the next stage of the company’s investment in the country’s cruise infrastructure and tourism sector.
First announced in April 2026, Sandy Cay will be reserved for guests of MSC Cruises and Explora Journeys. The development is being designed around a lower-density concept focused on 5 beaches, wellness and relaxation facilities, private retreats, dining and a higher level of personalised service.
MSC has positioned Sandy Cay as complementary to Ocean Cay rather than as a replacement or duplicate of the existing destination. The new island will incorporate elements of the nature-focused approach established at Ocean Cay, while offering a more secluded environment oriented towards luxury travel.
Ocean Cay is also undergoing further development. MSC plans to add dining venues, introduce separate beach concepts for families and adults, expand areas for relaxation and develop additional immersive experiences. The island remains a regular destination on MSC Cruises’ Caribbean itineraries.
Together, the two destinations will provide different private-island experiences within MSC Group’s Caribbean network, with Ocean Cay continuing to serve the broader cruise market while Sandy Cay is being developed around a more secluded luxury-oriented concept. MSC has not yet released booking details for Sandy Cay.
