RCI-Royal Caribbean International will bring The SpongeBob Musical to sea for the first time aboard Hero of the Seas, the cruise line’s fourth ICON Class ship.
The production will debut when the ship begins sailing from Miami in August 2027 and will serve as the headline theater production in the Royal Theater (a 3-deck-high show lounge located forward on decks 3-4-5).
Based on the Nickelodeon animated series and the 12-time Tony Award-nominated Broadway musical, the onboard production has been adapted for Royal Caribbean’s theater environment. The show will feature the characters and music of Bikini Bottom, with a storyline centered on SpongeBob and his friends as they attempt to save their town from destruction.
Royal Caribbean said the production is intended to expand its family entertainment offering, combining the original musical with the cruise line’s stage technology and production capabilities. The show will form part of the entertainment program aboard Hero of the Seas, which includes experiences across theater, air, water and ice.
Beyond the theater, Hero of the Seas will feature eight neighborhoods and a range of recreational and dining facilities. These include Crown’s Edge, a skywalk and zip-line experience suspended 154 feet above the ocean, and Category 6, described by the company as the largest waterpark at sea.
The ship will have nine pools, including the new Coconut Cove pool and the adults-only Hideaway, which will feature two pools and a large swim-up bar. Its dining program will comprise 28 venues, including the Orleans Parrish Supper Club and Royal Railway – Hero Station, an immersive dining experience designed around a train-car setting. A new venue offering hands-on cooking classes will also be introduced.
Accommodation options will include the three-deck Ultimate Family Treehouse, featuring a rooftop terrace, whirlpool and a two-deck space designed for teenagers.
Hero of the Seas will operate 7-night Eastern and Western Caribbean cruises from Miami, with every itinerary including a visit to Royal Caribbean’s Perfect Day at CocoCay in The Bahamas.
