Greek authorities imposed a 500-metre maritime security zone around the Crown Iris ship during its scheduled call at Argostoli, Kefalonia, on October 14th.
Temporary road access restrictions were also introduced along part of the port waterfront near the cruise terminal.
According to decisions published by local outlet Kefalonia Focus on October 13th, the maritime restrictions were in effect from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. on October 14th. Motorized and non-motorized vessels were prohibited from approaching within 500 metres of the ship’s berth, except for ferries operating the scheduled Argostoli–Lixouri service.
Vehicle access along part of the waterfront was restricted from 11:00 p.m. on October 13th until 8:00 p.m. the following day.
The orders cited the need to maintain safety, security and public order during the vessel’s visit. They did not identify a specific threat, refer to a planned demonstration or report any incident involving passengers or crew.
Crown Iris, operated by Israel-based Mano Maritime, has been the focus of pro-Palestinian demonstrations during previous calls at Greek ports. Protests continued in 2026, including a gathering in Piraeus on August 14th, when police prevented demonstrators from approaching the vessel.
Earlier incidents include a demonstration in Syros on July 22nd, 2025, following which Crown Iris departed ahead of schedule without passengers going ashore. Further protests took place in Rhodes and Crete, prompting police intervention and detentions.
Separately, espionage investigations in June 2025 resulted in arrests in Crete and Cyprus. Previous reporting by Crew Center noted that investigators examining the Crete case had reviewed photographs of cruise ships among images recovered during the investigation.
In June 2026, Greek police arrested a man in Crete suspected of preparing an attack against Israeli interests. Media reports identified Crown Iris as a possible target, although the initial police statement did not specify the intended target.
No publicly reported information has established a connection between these earlier incidents or investigations and the security measures imposed for the ship’s October 14th call at Argostoli.
Further reporting on the port authority’s decisions or any subsequent official statement could clarify whether additional security measures were planned for future calls.
