AmaWaterways will introduce a 6-day land extension to Machu Picchu (Peru) in 2027, expanding its travel programme beyond river cruising.
The 5-night experience will combine hotel stays, rail journeys, guided sightseeing and cultural activities, with guests able to choose between two hotel options: a Boutique package (featuring The Luxury Collection hotels) and an Iconic package (Belmond properties).
The extension will initially be offered on selected departures of the company’s Magic of Colombia cruisetour itinerary from April 2027. From 2028, it will become available on every post-cruise departure of the itinerary.
Following disembarkation in Cartagena, Colombia, guests will fly to Lima, with air travel between the destinations included in the package. The programme continues to Cusco and the Sacred Valley before culminating in a privately guided visit to Machu Picchu, the former Inca citadel in the Andes.
In Lima, the itinerary includes guided visits to the districts of Miraflores and Barranco. The journey then continues to Cusco, where guests can explore the city’s historic architecture, Inca heritage and regional cuisine.
A central element of the extension is the rail journey to Machu Picchu, available aboard either the Hiram Bingham, A Belmond Train, or first-class Inca Rail. A local guide will accompany guests during their visit to the archaeological site.
Other planned highlights include the Sacred Valley, Ollantaytambo, the Maras salt pans, Moray’s agricultural terraces and Cusco’s historic centre. The programme also features the former Inca temple of Koricancha and the hilltop fortress of Sacsayhuaman, alongside opportunities to experience Peruvian cuisine, art and local traditions.
AmaWaterways chief executive officer Catherine Powell said the new programme reflects the company’s broader focus on curated travel experiences that combine destinations with distinctive accommodation, dining and guided activities. The company intends to expand opportunities for guests to explore destinations beyond their river cruise itineraries.
The Boutique accommodation option includes The Westin Lima Hotel & Convention Center, Tambo del Inka, a Luxury Collection Resort & Spa, and Palacio del Inka, a Luxury Collection Hotel. The Iconic option features Miraflores Park, a Belmond Hotel, in Lima, and Monasterio, a Belmond Hotel, in Cusco.
Both packages combine hotel stays with culinary experiences and opportunities to explore Peru’s cultural and natural heritage. The extension marks AmaWaterways’ first dedicated Peruvian land journey and forms part of its strategy to broaden its range of destination-focused experiences.
